World Suicide Prevention Day

September being World Suicide Prevention Day, to raise awareness on suicide prevention during this month. I know September is also spring month in southern hemisphere.

But, I thought that I should talk on Suicide prevention which is the most important.
I would like to focus on treatment specially when suicide has been attempted, or suicidal thoughts or tendencies occur,this should not be ignored! this is very critical situation to deal with.

So What we need to do as family member, friend, or being part of the community when we hear about this?

It is our responsibility to reach out to them, as they do not know what to do due to various causes such as loneliness, chemical imbalances, withdrawal symptoms, being introvert, fear of rejection, even loss of appetite.

During this period, a person is unaware of his or her own behaviour.We need to be observant and vigilant towards the person’s behaviour.Approach a professional in this field at the right time for guidance, avail psychiatry treatment, psychotherapy session for individual also family session, group therapy, and strictly follow the guidelines provided by the professional.

Create the support structure. Make them realise that they are not alone once suicide is committed or attempted its very traumatic and unforgettable, the whole family suffers, regrets and struggles to accept the fact for years and years,All the time mind wanders on what, why and how we could have saved? It triggers fear in the family.

    Therefore, person should not be left alone right from the beginning. Ensure he/ she is taking medication on time. By following this you may save that spur of the moment (last minute decision) where trauma happens!

    It is usually not the person suffering that has stigma, but mostly, the friends and family and society that carry the stigma and don’t openly embrace these issues.
