Trauma and post-traumatic stress therapy
After a frightening event, the mind can stay switched on long after the danger has passed. Dr Suchita Chavda works with adults and adolescents in Kelvin, Sandton on hijacking, hold-ups, accidents, assault, medical trauma and loss.

How trauma tends to show up
These reactions are normal responses to an abnormal event. They are also treatable.
- Replaying the event without wanting to
- Nightmares or broken sleep
- Jumping at sounds or movement
- Avoiding the place, road or situation
- Feeling detached or unreal
- Anger that arrives quickly
- Difficulty concentrating
- Guilt about what you did or did not do
How therapy helps
Trauma work is paced. Nothing is forced, and you are never made to recount detail before you are ready — being pushed too fast does more harm than good.
The early work is about steadying the nervous system: sleep, grounding, managing the surges. Only then does the work turn to processing the memory itself so that it becomes something that happened to you, rather than something still happening.
In South Africa many people carry this quietly because the event was ‘ordinary’ here. It does not have to be extraordinary to have affected you.
What happens in a first session
We talk about what happened only as much as you want to on the first day. Mostly we talk about how you are sleeping, coping and functioning now.
Sessions run about an hour. Everything is confidential.
Medical aid
Contracted to most medical aids and charged at medical aid rates. Bring your membership details to the first session.
In person or online
Sessions are held in the consulting rooms in Kelvin, Sandton, or online — wherever you are in the country.
