Therapy for children and teenagers

Children rarely say what is wrong in words. They show it — at school, at bedtime, in their mood. Dr Suchita Chavda works with children, adolescents and their parents in Kelvin, Sandton.

When parents usually get in touch

Often after a teacher raises something, or when a change at home has knocked a child sideways.

How the work is done

With younger children the work happens through play, drawing and story rather than sitting and talking, because that is how children process. With teenagers it is more direct, and their privacy is taken seriously — that is often what makes them willing to speak at all.

Parents are part of the process. You will be given a clear sense of what is happening and what helps at home, without breaching the trust the child has placed in the room.

Group sessions for teenagers are also run, covering self-esteem, peer pressure and confidence.

What happens in a first session

The first session is usually with the parents, to gather history and understand the concern. The child is seen after that, at their own pace.

Sessions run about an hour. What a child shares is treated with care, and safety always comes first.

Medical aid

Contracted to most medical aids and charged at medical aid rates. Bring your membership details to the first session.

If something feels off, trust that

Parents are usually right that something has changed. Coming early makes the work shorter.
